  • Brief history of schools' finance (we need to know how we got here)
  • Roles and responsibilities of Govs and school - strategic v operational and how that fits into finance.
  • How the money is delivered e.g local and national formulae, census  etc
  • Finance policies what they might contain and what Govs need to be aware to look for in policies (using a generic from LMS)
  •  Budget summary ( generic..) - components of...., proportions of spend - so Govs know what their priorities need to be!!!
  • Monitoring (including benchmarking)
  • Post COVID issues relating to schools’ finance
  • Q & A

Rory McCormack

I began teaching in the late 1970’s and taught in primary schools up until my retirement in July 2017. For over 28 years of that time I was headteacher of 2 schools, firstly in Reading and then for over 20 years at St Lawrence’s RC Primary School in Feltham. During that time the school grew from 350 on roll to over 500 and was consistently oversubscribed . I was headteacher for 5 OFSTED inspections and all of the reports were favourable.

Since my retirement from headship, I have been working as an educational consultant. In that time I have supported 2 schools as a Consultant Headteacher whilst they recruited a new headteacher, I have carried out Headteacher Performance Management and have led Governor training both for Local Authorities and for individual schools. The topics I have led training on include Schools’ Finance (basic and more in depth), Pupil and Sports Premium, Headteacher Performance Management and understanding data. I have also carried out school reviews with individual schools and analysed Governing Body self review data for individual schools.

I am  Vice Chair of Governors for a large Primary School in central Hounslow, which had been judged as Requires Improvement prior to my joining the board. Governance was a significant issue in that judgement. The school is now judged as Good and governance was reported on very favourably.

I have 3 children and 1 grandchild and enjoy walking, reading, sport and gardening.
